What's past the age of pipes?

Let's say you connected the earth to the moon by a string and pulled the string very, very taught. Then you yanked on the string down here. Wouldn't the other end on the moon feel the pull at the same time? And wouldn't that mean that you transmitted the force of your arm all the way to the moon faster than the speed of light?

No, because the end of the string on the moon would not move immediately, and definitely not soon enough for your force to travel faster than light. You pulled on a few molecules of string here on earth. The attraction between those molecules and the ones further up the string caused a secondary movement and so on. But like a line at the supermarket, it takes time for the woman with two kids screaming about gum and lifesavers to realize that the old man in front of her has paid and is pushing his cart slowly out of the checkout aisle.

This is happening everywhere.
